The elegant, dark plum/purple/garnet-colored 2004 Dominus exhibits a big, sweet, cedary, roasted herb, mocha, black cherry liqueur, black currant, and earth-scented perfume. Medium to full-bodied with silky tannin as well as a luscious mouthfeel and finish, it should be more accessible in its youth than many of its predecessors, but easily last for two decades.

Dominus, produced by the Dominus Estate Corporation, is made solely from grapes grown on the historic Napanook Vineyard in Yountville, California.

In 2004, we had the shortest growing season in recent history. This vintage of Dominus is charming and fragrant, and will age gracefully.

The winter was normal with moderate rainfall. The vineyard received over 11 inches of rain during 26 days in December, and 8.5 inches of rain in February. Little rain fell during the spring. A heat wave in March prompted an early budbreak -- we saw 11 days over 80 degrees. April was also warmer than average. All of this warm weather resulted in a short growing season and an early harvest -- the earliest on record for Dominus. September was a hot month, with 13 days over 90 degrees and 3 days over 100 degrees. We maintained the integrity of the canopy to protect the grapes from the heat during their final stage of maturation.
