Rating: 92, Wine Spectator

"A rich, complex style, with excellent depth to the mix of ripe pear, fig and spice notes. Pretty toasty oak is also evident, yet for all the richness this is quite elegant. Drink now through 2009."
-James Laube, Wine Spectator, April 30, 2007

The unmistakable quality and uncompromising grape growing of Chalk Hill's Estate Bottled Chardonnay is illustratative of this producer's dedication to the quest for Chardonnay excellence. Twenty-six different vineyard plantings on the estate--a result of Chalk Hill's pioneering and ongoing clonal research program--yields different lots and different profiles, all building blocks that add to the sum.

Each year, the Chardonnay vineyards on the cool-climate estate slowly advance to full maturity, gaining richness, weight, and flavor concentration. Hand-harvested with the utmost care, the grapes were shepherded through our traditional, Burgundian-style winemaking. After pressing, the entire vintage was allowed to progress in barrel through both native yeast fermentations and native malolactic fermentations that imparted layers of texture and complexity. Aged in 35% new, François Frères French oak for 14 months, then gently bottled without fining or filtration, the wine boasts intense aromas of Asian pear, green apple, toasted hazelnut and integrated oak. Chalk Hill's signature combination of richness and elegance is evidenced by the creamy, crisp flavors of lemon pie and exotic spice, all buoyed by the bright, fresh acidity.
