The 2005 Gnarly Head Old Vine Zinfandel is crafted from grapes from 35 to 80 year old vines. Rich, dark berry flavors from the small grape clusters are balanced with French, American and Hungarian oak, which creates layers of plum, pepper, cola and chocolate. This luscious combination provides a lingering and spicy finish. This wine pairs well with barbecue, pizza, hearty pastas, chili and ribs.

The 2005 vintage will be remembered for its late and long harvest, which yielded grapes with a natural balance of intense fruit flavors, supple tannins and acid. The growing season began with a rainy spring followed by a long heat wave in June. Moderate temperatures during the rest of the growing season allowed the grapes to mature evenly and slowly and to develop complex and concentrated flavors. The grapes for this wine were hand-harvested in October 2005.

Lodi is the “zin-famous” appellation due to its ideal climate -– long, warm summer days and cooling night-time breezes from the ocean -– and its soil -– rich, well-draining loam. These two factors provide a combination that is perfectly suited for growing Zinfandel. Our grapes are hand-selected from some of the oldest and most respected vineyards in Lodi. Older vines produce fewer grape clusters, but the small berries yield intense, concentrated fruit flavors characteristic of great Old Vine Zinfandel.

Gnarly Head Old Vine Zinfandel grapes are hand-harvested from head-trained vines that are 35-80 years old. At the winery they are gently pressed immediately after harvesting. After 7-9 days fermentation, the wine was racked to concentrate the abundant fruit flavors and to add complexity.
